Malawi - Dedza Diocese - Mua Parish - Parish Church

These wall paintings are applied to the side of the church where the women sit and evoke their world. This has a double effect: even though in the presence of God, the congregation does not feel too far removed from its usual setting, and thus is not overawed; and conversely, it suggests that even in the village, in the congregation's usual setting, God is not far away. Illustrations are, respectively, of udzu (grass for thatching), masamba (green leaves for ndiwo) in a lichero (basket) and mowa (beer) in a ntsuko (jar), fire kindled between mafuwa (a hearth formed from three stones), mtondo (mortar) and musi (pestle), a village, two mbale (bowls) of food, gourds for drinking (ntsuko) and drawing (chikho) water, and a dengo (basket) full of chimanga (maize).
