Claude Boucher & Joseph Kadzombe – The Visitation

Malawi - Dedza Diocese - Mua Parish - Parish Church

This is Claude Boucher's companion piece to Mary Help of Christians and is placed to the right of the West door.

The Gospel account of the Visitation is brought to life in strong African colours and dress. Malawians, unlike so many in richer countries, consider new life an absolute good: the artist conveys well the thrill that Mary experiences when she places her hand on Elizabeth's womb and discovers the beating heart of a child.

It is interesting to note that, according to the artist, the public depiction of pregnancy was a source of controversy to the congregation: a matter that was resolved by the addition of the rather literal text.
