Thomas Mpira – Lectern (Holy Trinity)

Malawi - Dedza Diocese - Mua Parish - Parish Church

This is the first example (in this collection) of a number of intricately carved wooden lecterns by the artists of Kungoni Centre that have found their way to churches around the world.

Here Thomas Mpira reflects on the creative power of the Holy Trinity through a series of bold visual metaphors. At the top rain clouds represent the sky, which is the abode of God - Chauta. A dove encloses the pillar of the lectern with its wings, suggesting how all else operates under the auspices of the Holy Spirit. That is, God the Father, who creates by His Word: Creation emerges literally from His mouth, for everything that God speaks exists. And below is the Word Himself, Jesus, who, as God the Son, speaks for God the Father. His presence amongst the people of the parish is a catalyst for communion.
